Audible.com – A Great Listen Guaranteed

Audible.comRegular readers of Audiobook Addicts will know I’m a big fan of Audible.com: the 30-day Audible.com free trial, the 100,000+ titles available, the member-only sales…. and now I have one more reason to love them.

Audible.com now guarantees a great listen every time.

How so? Well, let’s say you download an audiobook but decide it’s not for you. Instead of having to come to grips with the realization you’ve wasted a credit (or in some cases two), you can now exchange it for something you’ll enjoy (up to a year from the purchase date).

To do this go online to Account Details or just contact Customer Care. Audible.com will credit your account and you can start over when you want.

Note: the fine print on the website says this is beta program available to certain members in good standing. You can find out more here:

Audible Author Services

Audible.com (which is owned by Amazon) has launched Audible Author Services, a program that establishes a $20 million fund from which audiobook authors will be paid $1 per sale through Audible.com, Audible.co.uk, and iTunes. Don Katz, Audible Founder and CEO, has posted the following letter on Audible.com:

Audible Author Services

Significantly, audiobook publishers do not receive any of the funds. Katz told The Guardian: “The fact is people buy a Neil Gaiman, not a HarperCollins or a Simon & Schuster, so it is for us to connect with the writers and hopefully wake them up to what they can do. If it works it can become a channel of membership and sales.”

The fund runs through December 31, 2012. Its continuation after that date will depend on how successful the program is.

Audible Releases iPhone App

audible iphone appAudible has just released a free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch (and iPad, although it’s not a universal app). Although you’ve been able to play Audible content on iPods and iPhones for some time, the the free app features Wi-Fi delivery of your Audible library, iOS 4 multitasking support, detailed listening stats, and more.

The Good:

- includes the basic features one would expect out of an audio book app, like chapter navigation, bookmarking, and listening and viewing controls.

- audio book enthusiasts will appreciate the ability to transfer books from your Audible library to your iPhone or iPad over Wi-Fi, a button-free mode that lets you control audio playback using gestures, a sleep timer and the ability to simultaneously listen to and download audio books courtesy of iOS 4′s multitasking support.

- includes fun extras, like the ability to track your personal listening habits, earn badges for performing certain actions, get insider information about author events and such with the Audible Newsfeed and connect to your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

- for those who aren’t Audible members, the app includes seven audio book excerpts to help get you interested, and as a bonus, if you create a new, free Audible account in the app, you’ll get a free excerpt of David Kirkpatrick’s The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World.

The Bad:

- you aren’t able to browse Audible’s selection or purchase books from the app; you will need to visit Audible’s website to do this.

- you will need to be connected to Wi-Fi to download any files larger then 20MB.

Overall

The Audible iPhone does not disappoint – it provides a better listening experience and a whole range of useful features. Nice one Audible.

Audible Gold Plan - Audible Free TrialAudible is the largest provider of digital audio books for download. Audible’s content includes over 85,000 titles from more than 1,000 content providers.

Most Audible listeners download audio books to their PCs and Macs and then transfer the audio books to MP3 players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), or to smart mobile devices (SMDs) for listening on the go. Others transfer, or “burn,” the content to audio CDs, while some people simply listen at their computers or through a digital home entertainment network.

Audible audio files are compatible with over 500 models of audio players, PDAs, streaming media devices and mobile phones (including iPhone, BlackBerry and Android phones).

  • 30% off any audio book purchased without a credit

The Gold Free Trial is a no obligation trial. If you are not 100% satisfied with Audible, you can cancel your Audible account before the end of the trial, pay nothing and keep your free audio books.

Audible also had a Platinum Membership Plan where members receive 2 credits per month. Audible does not currently have a special introductory offer for the Platinum Membership. My advice is to initially sign up with the Gold Membership and later upgrade to the Platinum Membership if you find that 1 audio book per month is not enough.
