Best Horror Audiobooks on Audible
Horror works best with the lights low and good headphones. Audible’s editors pick their favorites every year, and the Audie Awards now have a horror category, so this list starts there. I added Audible Originals, this year’s new releases and a few classics.
Everything here is on Audible. Some are quick scares you can finish in an evening, and others are long, slow-building listens.

Haunted Houses and Creepy Places
Hotels, mansions, renovations and one very strange furniture store.

Horrorstör
A haunted-house story set in an Ikea-style furniture superstore called Orsk. A few employees stay overnight to find out who is vandalizing the store, and things get much worse. Tai Sammons and Bronson Pinchot play up both the humor and the terror.

The House of Long Shadows
Kevin Taylor is hired to renovate an abandoned mansion for a reality show, and soon learns that the house’s past refuses to stay buried. It is a straightforward haunted house tale, and Joe Hempel narrates it with plenty of menace.

The Grand Hotel
In a sinister hotel, the past and present and the living and the dead blur together. The story unfolds through interconnected tales seen through the eyes of the desk clerk and the guests who get caught up in the building’s fate. Christian Rummel narrates.

The Amityville Horror
Jay Anson’s account of the Lutz family’s short, terrifying stay in what they thought was their dream home. The book is presented as a true story, though its claims have long been disputed. Ray Porter’s narration builds the dread.

Play Nice
A demon-haunted home renovation turns into a story about family, fear and a house that wants something. Audible’s editors praised its fresh take on the haunted house and the dual narration by Alex Finke and Natasha Soudek.

Model Home
A haunted-house story about three siblings that Audible’s editors chose for how it throws a curveball at a familiar trope. Gabby Beans gives it an eerie, distinctive voice.

Japanese Gothic
An inventive twist on the haunted house story told across two timelines: Sen, who wants to carry on a samurai legacy, and Lee, a grieving college student who travels to Japan hoping for a reset. Their stories seem worlds apart until the connection between them surfaces. Natalie Naudus narrates.
Vampires
From the original Count to an Audie Award-winning historical vampire.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula
A full-cast adaptation of the classic vampire story, released in October 2026. At just under six hours, it is a quicker way to meet the Count than the full novel.

Midnight Mass
Vampires have spread across the world, and a New Jersey shore town is under siege. Father Joe, Sister Carolyn and a small group of survivors band together to fight back. This is F. Paul Wilson’s novel, not the Netflix series of the same name. Jamie Renell narrates.

The Vampire Lestat
The second Vampire Chronicles novel follows Lestat from aristocratic France in the 1700s to his rock-and-roll exploits in the 1980s. Audible highlighted this new recording in its summer 2026 horror roundup, with Vikas Adam narrating.

Hungerstone
A feminist, sapphic reimagining of Carmilla, the vampire novella that predates Dracula. An unhappy wife meets a mysterious woman, and their connection stirs up a hunger that is about more than bloodlust. Audible’s editors loved Perdita Weeks’s narration.

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter
A historical vampire novel in which Good Stab, a Blackfeet man, seeks revenge for the 1870 Marias Massacre. The story is told through nested narration, including a pastor’s diary discovered by his granddaughter. It won the 2026 Audie Award for Horror and was one of Audible’s editors’ best horror listens of 2025.
Monsters, Curses and the Undead
Creatures and folklore horrors, from a Stephen King classic to a Zimbabwe-set Audible Original.

Pet Sematary
A family moves in next to a pet cemetery and a burial ground that gives back what it should not. It is one of King’s bleakest stories, and Michael C. Hall, best known as TV’s Dexter, narrates it.

World War Z: The Complete Edition
An oral history of the zombie war, told through interviews with survivors from around the world. The voices change with every chapter, which makes the audiobook feel like a documentary.

Catchers
A small-town dog catcher on the verge of retirement and his Gen Z replacement find something far worse than a stray. It plays like an 1980s creature feature with a modern twist and some humor, and it is the shortest listen on this list.

Relics
When her fiancé vanishes, Angela Gough is led into a hidden corner of the world where ancient creatures and myths live on. Esther Wane narrates this dark, atmospheric story.

When the Wolf Comes Home
A woman and the young child she finds hiding in her bushes are sent on the run from chilling horrors. It is gory but also darkly funny, and Audible’s editors called it one of the most unforgettable audiobooks of the year, with Helen Laser’s wit on full display.

Sacrilege: Curse of the Mbirwi
Rooted in African folklore, this Audible Original follows an African American family whose vacation in Zimbabwe, meant to help them reconnect, turns into a nightmare. Nine narrators perform it, with Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things) in the lead.
Slashers, Killers and Human Monsters
Human threats, unsettling crimes and one knife-wielding classic.

Halloween: The Official Movie Novelization
The novelization of the 2018 film follows Laurie Strode as she faces Michael Myers forty years after he first terrorized Haddonfield. Emily Sutton-Smith narrates.

I Was a Teenage Slasher
Seventeen-year-old Tolly Driver lives with a peanut allergy in Lamesa, Texas, and is about to start a killing spree. Audible’s editors called it a love letter to outcasts and slasher films, based on the author’s own West Texas upbringing.

The Girl Next Door
A teenage girl is placed in the care of her unstable aunt, and the adults and children around her slowly turn cruel. This is the most disturbing book here and it is not for everyone. Ketchum reads it himself, which makes it more intimate and harder to shake.

Headlights
Special Agent Daniel Stansfield returns to Denver to face a case he ran from four years ago, as killers who cannot remember their crimes turn up wearing their victims’ skin. Audible describes it as a detective thriller with a supernatural edge, with Andrew Eiden narrating.
Historical and Supernatural Horror
Gothic, haunted and rooted in real history.

Between Two Fires
Set in France in 1348 during the Black Death, this follows a disgraced knight who protects a girl believed to carry a divine secret. It moves from historical fiction into full horror, and Steve West gives it a bleak but human voice.

Ghost Road Blues
The first book in the Pine Deep trilogy. As Halloween approaches, a small town with a dark past faces a new wave of violence and something worse. Tom Weiner’s gritty narration suits the setting.

The Reformatory
A haunting that draws on the real violence of the Jim Crow South. Audible’s editors chose it as one of the best horror listens of 2023, and Joniece Abbott-Pratt narrates.

The Possession of Alba Díaz
A demonic entity is released from a Mexican silver mine and possesses a woman. It is gothic and atmospheric, with Carolina Hoyos and Anthony Rey Perez performing it.
Modern, Strange and Genre-Bending
Techno-horror, meta horror and Stephen King at his darkest.

Bird Box
In a world where seeing something drives people to violence, Malorie must take her children down a river blindfolded. The tension works especially well in audio, where Cassandra Campbell’s narration keeps you listening.

Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep
A semi-pro gamer is recruited to remotely pilot a brain-dead man across the country, but his consciousness has not entirely faded. This is techno-horror, and Audible notes the sound design mimics the story.

Bury Your Gays
Chuck Tingle’s horror novel is full of pop-culture nods and meta moments, and the less you know going in, the better. It won the 2025 Audie Award for Horror and was one of Audible’s editors’ best horror listens of 2024.

You Like It Darker
Twelve short stories, some new and some fan favorites, that add depth to the multiverse King has created. Audible’s editors singled out Will Patton’s performance.
