Kids audiobooks: common questions
What age can kids start listening to audiobooks?
Most children can enjoy short audio stories from age 2 or 3. Picture books that run a few minutes are a good start, and you can move on to early chapter books around age 5 or 6.
Do audiobooks count as reading for kids?
Listening builds vocabulary, comprehension and a love of stories, and it lets kids enjoy books above their reading level. It is not the same as reading print, so a mix of both works best. Many kids follow along with the print book while they listen.
What are the best audiobooks for 5 year olds?
Frog and Toad, Winnie-the-Pooh, The Gruffalo and Where the Wild Things Are are all good choices, along with early chapter books like Magic Tree House and Mercy Watson.
What are the best audiobooks for car rides with kids?
Longer, fast-moving stories work best, such as The Lightning Thief, Holes, The Wild Robot and Harry Potter. See my list of audiobooks for road trips for 50 more ideas.
What are the shortest audiobooks for young kids?
Goodnight Moon (4 minutes), Where the Wild Things Are (5 minutes) and The Very Hungry Caterpillar (8 minutes) are the shortest here. Mercy Watson to the Rescue runs 19 minutes and Dinosaurs Before Dark runs 41 minutes.
