The Best YA Audiobooks, According to Indie Booksellers
YA gets some of the most inventive treatment in audio. Publishers cast whole ensembles, hand the microphone to the authors, and in at least one case record the story as a podcast. The books help, too: they start fast, the emotions run high, and a good narrator can make a sixteen-year-old sound like one.
These 27 YA audiobooks are all recommended by independent booksellers through Libro.fm. Each has the narrator and length of the edition I link to, plus the bookseller’s own review of why it’s worth your time.

Best YA fantasy audiobooks
Magic, myth and rebellion, from West African-inspired epics to Arthurian legend.

Legendborn
“Tracy Deonn expertly takes Arthurian myth and weaves them into the modern day in Legendborn with magic, secret societies, and high stakes action. Whether you are familiar with those myths or not doesn’t even matter. Either way you’ll quickly be captivated by her writing, world building, and compelling characters – all paired with an excellent narrator.”

Children of Blood and Bone
“A sprawling fantasy teeming with deep and meaningful magic. One of the things I like most about this debut is that it raises very real and important issues of our time through multiple character’s perspectives. No character is one-dimensional, and every character must learn from failure and introspection to become who they were meant to be.”

Throne of Glass
“Yes, this is 100% worth all the hype. I debated for so long on reading this series, but I am SO happy I finally took the plunge. IT IS EVERYTHING!!! It hands down became my favorite series in the Maas universe and one of my favorite series ever. I tore through the first three books in a week. Just do it, buy Throne of Glass, and let it change your world. CELAENA SARDOTHIEN IS A BADASS!!!!”

An Ember in the Ashes
“If you’re looking for a fantasy series that will rip your heart out, An Ember in the Ashes is the perfect book for you. Set in a Roman-style empire, Laia and Elias are on opposite sides of the conflict; Elias is training to compete for the throne and Laia is trying to find her brother after he had been taken for aiding the resistance. Though they are on different sides, neither is free.”

Divine Rivals
“A romance set in a world of war, vengeful gods, and magic. Ross seamlessly blends the mundane into her fantastical world. Follow the young and breathless lovers from their work desks to front line trenches. Couldn’t turn this off! Looking forward to book #2!”

Sabriel
“First of all – this is narrated by Tim Curry. If I have to keep convincing you, that’s fine – but that should be enough. 🙂 YA Fantasy at its finest, I grew up re-reading this original trilogy every year and it honestly keeps getting better each time. Garth Nix is a master of his craft!”

Iron Widow
“Iron Widow is such a cinematic blockbuster of a book, with an inventive setting, sci-fi action, great characters, and excellent romance. I listened to it through Libro.fm, and now I’m counting down the days until the sequel.”

The Raven Boys
“Reading this whole series is like dreaming a strange and wonderful dream. Mesmerizing, magical, and lyrical, this book weaves together the stories of four private schoolboys and a psychic’s daughter in their pursuit of an ancient legend. One of my favorite books/series of all time.”
Best YA dystopian and sci-fi audiobooks
Rebellions, spaceships and a return to Panem.

The Hunger Games
“The revolution absolutely will be televised in this perennially important dystopian fiction entry focused on Katniss Everdeen, a girl without much aside from the mountain of trauma heaped on her by circumstance and situation.”

Sunrise on the Reaping
“This book feels like a prophecy fulfilled. We learn about the state of the world before Katniss. Her parents generation by way of Haymitch Abernathy. A whole cast of characters to love, a fast-paced plot, and a complex but enjoyable storyline. Absolutely recommend!”

Illuminae
“The most innovative, exciting work of science fiction–maybe even book in general–that I’ve ever read. Snarky teenagers, twisted AI, plague on a spaceship, and a stunningly unique dossier storytelling template. A great start to an amazing trilogy and an entire PRODUCTION of an audiobook.”

Cinder
“I love a good protagonist and Cinder is one of my favorites. She reminds me of Kaylee from Firefly and has the spunk and skill to be worthy of the comparison. Royal politics and the fate of her country intrudes on her escape plan, revealing things about herself and her past that she never expected. This book mashes up classic fairytale and science fiction to create an awesome YA title.”
Best YA mystery, thriller and horror audiobooks
Podcast-style thrillers, crime and horror for anyone who likes to be scared.

Firekeeper’s Daughter
“This story of a young woman roped into a federal investigation of a drug ring tearing her Ojibwe community apart is riveting and sorrowful. Daunis is an 18 year old non-enrolled Ojibwe with plenty of ambition and skills and won’t see a clear path to her future that doesn’t involve working in her community.”

Sadie
“A book set up like a podcast? Intriguing. The audiobook set up like a podcast with more than 30 voices? MASTERFUL! Next time you’re looking for a true-crime podcast series, look no further than Sadie for all of your true-crime intrigue. Equal parts thrilling and heartrending, this story will stay with you long after you’re done listening.”

The Scammer
“I think I was holding my breath until the very end. Such a chilling story, but an important one to tell. Tiffany D. Jackson is one of the best young adult authors of our time! Masterful storytelling that often serves as the catalyst for great conversations.”

Hell Followed with Us
“Rage abounds in this fantastically immersive story of one trans boy’s escape from radical Christian fundamentalism in a Revelations-style landscape where the word grace might as well be synonymous with the word death.”
Best contemporary and historical YA audiobooks
Novels in verse, family stories and historical fiction, with some of the most decorated audiobooks on the list.

The Hate U Give
“This bestselling, powerful young adult novel about social justice and one teen girl’s effort to fight for what is right, will leave you breathless. The narration by Bahni Turpin is hands down the best I’ve ever heard. This is such an important book it should be required reading for life in general. Or listening. Definitely listening.”

The Poet X
“Getting to listen to the author herself read her poetry, which are clearly a testament to the spoken word and the art of slam, is absolutely the best way to devour this novel-in-verse. Acevedo puts everything into her words, and no one else could do them justice the way she does herself.”

Clap When You Land
“This audiobook is brilliant. Acevedo wrote this beautiful novel in verse and then turned in a beautiful performance in the audiobook alongside Melania-Luisa Marte. The care Acevedo brings to this story is apparent: this is a story about grief, love, family, and community.”

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
“Full of poetic melancholy, this beautifully crafted story of youth, family, and struggling to find oneself will resonate with anyone who’s still searching for their place in the world. Hopeful and funny but with an underlying sense of gloom, this book holds a special place in my heart.”

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
“Like an old familiar smell, or the first cool day in fall, this book yanks you right back into high school in all the best ways. Simon and his friends are charming, smart, and genuinely funny. Don’t be surprised if by the end of the book you find yourself pining once again for that crazy time in life where it feels like you age a decade in a week.”

Soundtrack
“This is, without a doubt, one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to. I was already a fan of Jason’s work, but he has surpassed himself. A true audiobook created for an audience of listeners. Outstanding.”

Under the Same Stars
“Three intertwining storylines unravel a mystery that has spanned decades. A beautifully woven multigenerational coming if age, through the scope of activism and the ripples we make when we stand together.”
Best YA romance audiobooks
Love stories across centuries, from 1720s Europe to 1950s San Francisco.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue
“Super fun YA historical romance. The humor and voice was on point. The self-effacing “anti-hero” who is actually pretty kind and good has a really nice YA arc. The love story was delightful. It was fun to be on this journey with the characters.”

Last Night at the Telegraph Club
“Recently banned in the state of SC, this is a story of love and duty set in San Francisco’s Chinatown during the Red Scare. The parallels of 1954 to today are quite frightening and eye opening. This book beautifully introduces difficult topics to younger readers, and I encourage adults to take time to read it, too.”

Cemetery Boys
“Listening to Cemetery Boys made me smile. A lot. Aiden Thomas presents a story of persistence, mystery, and finding one’s place in the world. Yadriel, a trans, teenage, latinx boy, lives in a family of brujos and brujas. After coming out as trans his family does not know where he fits within their traditions.”

I Kissed Shara Wheeler
“Another audiobook that I could not stop listening to! A fun, light high school romance that should immediately be turned into a movie and will launch the new brat pack. I loved that these characters got to fight against their school and it’s outdated beliefs (especially since I saw college graduates do the same thing in real life on tiktok just the other day).”
